Actor Brendan Fraser has signed on to play a morbidly obese, reclusive gay man in Darron Aronofsky’s film adaptation of the critically acclaimed Samuel D. Hunter Broadway play The Whale.
Variety reports: “It’s the story of a 600-pound middle-aged man named Charlie and his attempts to reconnect with his 17-year-old daughter. The two became estranged after Charlie abandoned his family for his gay lover, who later died. Charlie then turned to compulsive eating out of grief. Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures will also produce the film.”
Fraser has been mostly out of the headlines since he spoke out publicly about an alleged sexual assault by the former Golden Globes president which took place at a luncheon held by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 2003 at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Fraser said that concerns about “humiliation” and “damage to [his] career” had prevented him from speaking up till then.

Star Trek: Discovery‘s LGBT+ crew just grew a little bigger as actor Mary Wiseman confirms she is “queer and proud”.
Wiseman, a powerhouse actor who plays fan-favourite Ensign Tilly, revealed that she has loved “people of all genders” in a recent interview with StarTrek.com.
That small detail almost wasn’t published as the Zoom call’s audio cut out just as Wiseman started to say “I’m not straight”. Some shrewd lip-reading prompted writer Dawn Ennis to follow up with Wiseman, who happily confirmed it in a Twitter DM.
“I did say this! It’s not a big deal at all, I just didn’t want to say I’m straight when I’m not!” the star wrote, adding that before she met her husband Noah Averbach-Katz – who played Ryn the Andorian – she “dated and loved people of all genders.”
She went on to explain why she keeps fairly quiet about the topic, saying: “I never liked it when straight-presenting women dominated conversations about bisexuality/pansexuality when I was with women, so I try not to do it now, but I also don’t want it to feel like I’m hiding anything because I’m queer and proud!”
Wiseman’s far from alone on a show that’s won widespread praise for its strong LGBT+ representation, both in its cast and script.
The show’s co-creator Bryan Fuller also identifies as queer, as do actors Anthony Rapp, Wilson Cruz, Blu Del Barrio and Ian Alexander – all of whom play LGBT+ characters themselves.
Together Del Barrio and Alexander took on the first trans and non-binary roles in the franchise’s 54-year history, and their characters form an adorable queer family with gay couple Hugh and Paul.
“I’m proud to say that we are bringing you the queerest Trek in history!” Wilson Cruz said ahead of the launch of season three. With Mary Wiseman on board, we’re hoping season four will follow in an equally queer direction.
Star Trek: Discovery is available to watch now on Netflix in the UK and CBS All Access in the US.

A Doritos advert about a father who suspects his son to be gay is going viral for all of the right reasons.
The ad was released by Doritos Mexico at Christmas and has found its way into LGBTQ members’ hearts across the globe.
Based on a true story, the ad has been viewed 14 million times. Titled “El Mejor Regalo” which translates to “the best gift”, the video is narrated by the father who notices there’s something more between his son and “friend” Manuel.
Unsure on what to do, the father turns to Reddit asking for advice, “Hello, I’m a 52-year-old divorced father and need some help, I think my son and his friend are a couple and he won’t tell me”.
The advert goes onto show us loving scenes between the two, including riding a horse together and trying to sneakily cuddle in the father truck.
In one scene whilst having a meal together, the son calls Manuel “Honey”, leaving Manuel looking confused on how to react.
Throughout it all, it’s clear the father isn’t judging his son and wants to support his son. He writes to Reddit, “How can I let him know everything is ok?”
As the advert comes to an end, the father and son duo are seen having a special moment. Without outing the son, he simply says “I love you” to which Javier the son replies “What you want to tell me, is that you love me how I am?”
The Best Gift with English Subtitles
What Doritos has achieved is showing the importance and beauty of supporting LGBTQ+ youth. The ad is part of the continued LGBTQ+ outreach programs Doritos have implemented via Doritos Rainbow.
The company has recently started a #PrideAllYear campaign, allowing the public to post their own stories.
Eduardo Córdoba, marketing director of Doritos goes on to say “We’re’ really proud of the accomplishments that have been achieved with Doritos Rainbow, we believe the moment is right to show that our commitment extends beyond a proud celebration every June.”

Luke Evans (R) and his boyfriend, Rafa Olarra. (Instagram)
Luke Evans has confirmed that he and his boyfriend Rafael Olarra have split following weeks of press speculation.
Evans made his relationship with Olarra public in February 2020 by sharing a video of themselves holidaying together in Hawaii.
However, speculation mounted in October 2020 that the couple had split after Evans unfollowed Olarra, who works as a luxury art director at an American hotel chain, on Instagram.
Evans also deleted all photos of Olarra from his Instagram account, leading to feverish speculation from fans that the Beauty and the Beast actor was a single man once more.
Evans confirmed the split in an interview with The Times, simply saying: “It is what it is.”
He went on to open up about his dream of becoming a dad, revealing that he has thought about starting a family – and he may yet decide to go it alone.
“I thought about it many times and as I get older I’m thinking maybe I should get on and do it,” Luke Evans said when asked if he would like to have children.
“I don’t want to be an old dad… but I would like to be a dad. There’s a lot of satisfaction to passing on your experiences and rearing a strong, open-minded, kind, respectful human being who can go out in the world and do something good.”
Luke Evans said it was ‘lovely’ to play a gay man in Nine Perfect Strangers
Elsewhere in the interview, Luke Evans opened up about playing a gay man for the first time in the upcoming series Nine Perfect Strangers.
Evans plays a gay divorce lawyer in the show, and he said it was “lovely” to play a queer person after so many years of playing straight characters.
“It was nice to play a gay character after all these years of doing roles on stage and screen,” he said.
Evans also briefly waded into the never-ending debate around whether straight actors should play gay characters. When asked if he thinks there is “equality” in casting, he said: “I don’t know. All I can answer is that from a personal point of view, I’ve played many different roles and I think things are changing on a daily basis.
“There is definitely a very strong, loud dialogue about equality within the industry and getting the right person for the right role – which I think is what it comes down to,” he said.

Hunter Schafer at the 2020 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. (Matt Winkelmeyer/VF20/WireImage)
When HBO’s Euphoria landed on our screens in 2019, it did that rare thing that a good show is wont to do: made the entire cast famous, almost overnight, and none more so than Hunter Schafer.
It was the 21-year-old’s first-ever acting role, and Schafer’s portrayal of Jules was another rare thing: a trans actor playing a trans role.
But while Schafer was new to acting, they were not new to the spotlight. She’s modelled for fashion houses including Dior, Miu Miu, Calvin Klein and Vera Wang; met Hilary Clinton in 2017, when she was named one of TeenVogue’s 21 under 21; and in the same year was a plaintiff in an ACLU lawsuit against an anti-trans bathroom bill in North Carolina.
Speaking on North Carolina public radio at the time, Hunter said: “I do like people to know that I’m not a cis girl because that’s not something that I am or feel like I am. I’m proud to be a trans person.”

Born in 1999 in Trenton, New Jersey, Schafer’s parents moved around between New Jersey and Arizona before settling in Raleigh, North Carolina. Their parents are Katy and Mac, who is a pastor. Schafer has three younger siblings, two sisters and a brother.
Schafer came out as trans while in high school and has described transitioning at a public school as “a pretty intense experience”. It was this that led to her involvement with the ACLU lawsuit against North Carolina’s anti-trans bathroom bill, which repealed a law that banned trans students from using the bathroom matching their gender.
Writing for i-D at the time, Schafer said: “As a transgender teenager who grew up in North Carolina, navigating bathrooms on my own was an extremely difficult journey, particularly at public school. In early high school (during a more primary stage in my transition), I felt safer using the women’s restroom and locker room.
“But I was often met with compromises, like being told to use a staff bathroom or the men’s room, which was basically a sentence to eternally hold it in.
“I felt like an outlaw every time I had to pee, as if I this natural bodily function were some unforgivable act.”
While Schafer called herself a trans woman as a teen, she’s since said that having learned more about the Western gender binary and the spectrum of gender, that she’s “let go of the idea that I need to do the one or the other — and just let myself be”.
In 2019, they told Dazed in 2019 (as part of the “Identities” special that also featured whistleblower and trans woman Chelsea Manning, trans model Finn Buchanan and intersex advocate Tatenda Ngwaru) that their sexuality is “closer to what you might call a lesbian”.

Partly because they were a plaintiff in the ACLU lawsuit and partly because most trans people, especially those in the public eye, tend to be described as activists, Schafer was then described as an activist. But while the label fit comfortably for a while, it’s not one she uses now; this is something she thoughtfully explained in a New York Times interview in 2019.
“When I think of an activist, I think of a community organiser who is working every day and directly with community members, and making it a job to take care of and speak up for a community in some way,” Schafer said.
“So as an actor and an artist whose primary focus is making artwork or world-building, I don’t think I fall into that category.
“There might have been a point in my career where, because people have been telling me I’m an activist, I took on that label. But in retrospect, I don’t think that’s what I am — or what I’ve been — just because I’m vocal about my identity sometimes.”

After graduating high school in 2017, Schafer moved to New York and began modelling. They had plans to study fashion design at Central Saint Martins in London when their agent got in touch – would Schafer audition for an HBO show called Euphoria?
Schafer said she was “mildly interested” in acting but hadn’t thought she’d be pursuing it seriously. “I gave it a shot,” they said, “then I just kept going back in and getting more of the scripts and eventually started to fall in love with my character.”
Euphoria catapulted Schafer to fame – though not, to the disgust of fans, to an Emmy nomination. Her snub was part of a wider pattern that blighted the Emmy nomination announcement last year, which saw 11 acting nods given to members of the LGBT+ community but many trans talents ignored, including Schafer and the Black and Latinx cast members of Pose.

While Euphoria has now ended, Schafer and co-star Zendaya have remained firm friends. The pair are so close that when a trans fan of the show met Zendaya in 2019, she ended up facetiming Schafer so that the fan could have a chance to talk to them.
“Zendaya facetimed Hunter because the girl is trans and said Hunter was an inspiration to her through Euphoria and Zendaya wanted to connect the two of them so she could tell Hunter herself,” said a tweet showing a video of it happening.
The video shows the fan in tears, repeating how she “has to be dreaming” and it “can’t be real”.

A Capricorn, natch, Schafer turned 21 on 31 December, 2020.
Fans can next catch them in a special one-off episode of Euphoria on 24 January.

The first episode sees Elizabeth Hurley join RuPaul, Michelle and Graham. (BBC)
We’ve seen the Drag Race UK season two opener and believe us – it couldn’t come at a better time.
You don’t need us to tell you 2021 has, so far, been every bit as horrific as the-year-that-shall-not-be-named. And, frankly, a new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK isn’t going to cure the many ills of this world – but it’s a damn good distraction nonetheless.
Season two of Drag Race UK comes to BBC iPlayer Thursday (14 January) without any misjudged lip-sync extravaganzas twists or gimmicks. Like season one, it’s a leaner, more focused version of its American big sister – only this time, the stakes have been raised.
“I’m not being unkind, but the first season was a little bit rough around the edges – in the best possible way, in a very British way,” said guest judge and national treasure Lorraine Kelly at a recent Q&A.
And, it feels important to say, we all loved season one. Fears that the format wouldn’t work with the British sense of humour, or that it might not get our unique style of drag, were completely unfounded, with the 10 queens showcasing the incredible diversity (to an extent) the nation has to offer.
The new cast build on this legacy, broadening it while adding a little visual polish.
The new cast of Drag Race UK. (BBC)
“There was more couture, there was more high-end, the glamour had been amped up,” said judge Alan Carr.
As ever, Michelle Visage was on hand to demystify why.
“As you all know, on the first series of any competition show it’s always like, we’ll take the best of who we get because people wait, they think they’re too good for a first series,” she explained.
“They’re like, ‘I’ll let those people go for it and see how they do. They can’t possibly compare to the US [queens].’”
“Not only did they compare, but we showed them all wrong. Like, you should have auditioned. And now, we’ve got thousands of auditions for series two and the standard is unbelievable.”
Michelle added: “There is no beating [season one], every series is different. But this one is an incredible lot of kids. I was blown away.”
Let the judging commence. (BBC)
Drag Race UK season two brings the goods.
Graham Norton referred specifically to the very first runway of the new season: “There are some really clever, clever looks, genius things you just wouldn’t have thought of.”
No spoilers, but conceptually (and on execution), one of them is up there with the very best. The challenge itself – a double hometown glory and gay UK icon runway – gives the queens free rein to bring their creativity to the main stage, celebrating British culture in some unexpected ways and sparking important werk room conversations in the way the best Drag Race challenges tend to do.
One other difference teased by Graham is the relationships between the queens. As judge, he isn’t privy to the goings-on of the werk room, but agreed that from watching the first episode, things feel a little “spikier”.
“Season one was such a lovefest,” he said, “I think they all got on back in that werk room, they had a great time, they really supported each other. I’m not sure that’s the storyline this time.” In other words, expect shade from the get-go.
The preview we were shown went dark before the bottom two lip-synced, but we’re expecting the new season to bring that goods in that arena.
There are a couple of self-professed dancing queens (with Asttina in particular boasting an impressive CV). One of our (we’ll say it) favourite queens, Tayce, teased in a recent Gay Times interview that “the lip-syncs are the gag” this season, with another of the newbies, A’Whora, adding: “I don’t think any lip-sync from the last season is on par with the worst of our lip-syncs of this season. Their best is our worst.”
Tayce makes a strong impression in episode one. (BBC)
The judges were tight-lipped when asked, but Michelle promised we “will not be let down”.
Alan Carr was slightly more forthcoming, teasing: “There is a slow song, by a British icon… the hairs on my arm stood up. It was one of the most amazing things. It was so powerful. We all love a fast one, we all love a boogie at the end, but this one was chilling. Mesmerising. Really, really powerful.”
As for the judges themselves, they’re on top form. RuPaul and Michelle are clearly energised by being in the UK (although we’d like a word with whoever taught Michelle a certain phrase that crops up in her comments); Graham is witty as ever (Alan doesn’t appear in the first episode, with him and Graham alternating thought the series) and Elizabeth Hurley will go down as one of the great guest judges.
All in all, it’s a solid opener – perhaps without the sheer ‘oh my god, is this actually happening’ feeling the season one premiere elicited, but a welcome relief from *gestures around wildly* that sets up what could be one of the best Drag Races yet.

They say in fashion, one day you’re in, and the next you’re out. Well, in drag, one day you’re in, then you’re out, but then you might be in again? And then some more wild stuff happens and you may ultimately end up out. Or in.
Suffice to say the swerves keep coming in the thirteenth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. After a wild, lip-sync smackdown of a premiere, the second ep kept the gals split, but their fates continue to hang in the balance.
Picking up where we left off last week, the eliminated queens in the Pork Chop Loading Dock have been tasked with eliminating one of their own. With nothing else to go on but first impressions, the gals make their way to the lipstick vote.
The vote splits between Utica and Elliott with 2 Ts. (Though there is also some great shade from Denali about Joey Jay’s chicken feathers, which is exactly the level of petty I’m here for.) Then we get thrown to a RUN-OFF VOTE, which, lord, haven’t we been through enough this week?! What’s next, a Steve Kornacki makeover challenge?
Eventually, Elliott (let’s all agree the 2 Ts are implied in print, ok?) is voted out.
Or is she?
In the Werk Room, last week’s winners are greeted by Ru, fresh off the fracking farm in a cowboy hat, which, honestly, works on him. Ru reminds everyone of Victoria “Porkchop” Parker’s legacy: The very first queen eliminated (13 years ago!) is an icon. Other early exits like Vanjie and Shangela, have gone on to international fame.
With that said, Elliott enters, immediately raising Tina’s suspicions that Elliott is … a spy? (Not this again.)
This week’s mini-challenge is one of my favorites, the runway show. They’re tasked with serving two lewks, demure daytime and lady of the night. I’ll pop in some more thoughts on each queen’s ensembles in the rankings below, but highlights include Gottmik’s note-perfect sunny day latex presentation and asymmetrical, goth evening gown; Olivia Lux’s fun, fierce, feathered frock looking straight out of the closet of Amber from Clueless (As if! Like she would really wear something from Judy’s!); and Symone’s incredible striped suit (with cape!).
Not so hot to trot was Kandy in a red Elizabethan-esque gown and white wig (inexplicably for daytime) and her devilish, latex suit with a bizarre hole in the back. Oh, honey.
Of course, that’s just the beginning. This episode’s real challenge is going to be a group performance of Ru’s latest track, “Condragulations.” You know the deal: Original verse, choreo and a big group lip sync number.
When they get the chance to rehearse, no one is leaping to take the lead on choreo. Elliott reveals to camera that he is a choreographed dancer. Instead of seizing the moment to showcase all his talents, he hangs back. Well, until Tina’s suggestions are too bad to allow. Eventually, Elliott steps in, but it only makes him more suspicious to the other queens.
Gottmik struggles in choreo, but for different reasons. He wrote lyrics about his gender, but hadn’t had the chance to talk about it with the other competitors. Hearing the lyrics is upsetting for Mik, and it throws the whole practice time. Later, at the makeup mirror, Gottmik confides in Olivia in a very touching scene. (See also Untucked for more of this conversation with the other queens.) The important thing is Gott’s got the confidence back and is ready for the runway.
On the mainstage, Jamal Sims joins the judging panel for the big group number. The song is not one of my favorite Ru tracks. Don’t get me wrong, Mama Ru has some bangers, but this is not one I’ll be adding to my pre-summer playlist at the conclusion of the season.
The performance is pretty lackluster overall. Kandy clearly misses some steps, Gottmik seems a bit distracted. However, Lala, Tina and Symone shine. But the real star is Olivia. Not only does she have the most polished voice, but her sync is full of personality and she embodies every move.
This week’s runway theme (yes, another runway) is “Lamé, you stay.” More below, but Gottmik nearly steals the show from the start with incredible gold body armor. Iconic. Symone takes an unexpected tact and comes out like a boxer, complete with robe. Tina had the judges in awe of her Tin Man-inspired presentation, including an axe purse and a bedazzled heart inside her jacket. I mean, incredible. Wonderful.
The judges agree, but choose Symone and Olivia as the top two of the week. In yet another twist, the winners lip sync for a $5,000 tip to Dua Lipa’s “Break My Heart.” Olivia goes for it, but Symone just knows how to PERFORM. She does so much more by doing less.
In the end, Ru decides to give the tip to Symone, and no one is going home.
But what about the other lip-sync losers from episode one? We’ll find out next week!
Before we do, we have one more order of business. I stuck to ranking only this week’s featured queens, so these could be shaken up easily over the coming weeks. Disagree? Leave your rankings in the comments!
Never have I wanted to crown a queen out of the gate as badly as I do Symone. Gorgeous, talented, clever, everything I want in a Drag Race queen. She always looks incredible on the runway, but both her daytime lewk and her lamé interpretation were, well, knockouts. She carries herself like a star on stage, and she leaves us no choice but to treat her similarly.
Nipping at the number one, Olivia is just barely in second, for now. Her smile and charm are infectious. She was one of the few redeeming elements of the group performance, and both of her runway presentations, day and night, were fantastic. We mentioned her day look above, but the night outfit was also beautiful. I even enjoy the tiny purse schtick. (If you have to have a schtick, don’t let it steal too much focus.)
Tina was smart to ditch her hot dog color palette for the lamé on the mainstage. Her Tin Man outfit was flawless, from head to toe. It was the perfect mix of glamour, camp, surprise and delight, and it was the most I’ve liked Tina so far. Michelle rightly clocked Tina for playing to the stage, not the screen; a great note and a reminder what a good judge does.
OK, there’s no doubt Gottmik can bring it to the runway (runway), but will performance be a hindrance? Mik was the first to admit being short of a lip sync assassin. Still, I adored every garment, especially the latex rainbow/sunshine number. Then, to be hit with that jaw-dropping gold lamé body suit? Wonder Woman wishes.
Ooh, I want so badly to put Lala Ri higher in this list, because I adore her personality. However, damn, some of those outfits are tough. Her daytime ensemble looked right off the rack, and I wasn’t nearly as impressed with the night one. Still, she turned it out for gold lamé and was one of the few standouts during the performance (even though she was wearing another lackluster leotard for that).
I’m not sure how to say this nicely, but Elliott is neither likable nor exciting enough to convince me she’ll be around for the long haul. Again, the judges were more enamored with her night runway than I was. It just felt a little out-of-the-box for me. Not like a Duane Reade Halloween costume, but certainly like a Mary Shelley cosplay. There’s a spark there, for sure, but she needs to develop more. Initially opting out of choreographing the group number, despite her experience, is not what this show is about. A superstar takes the spotlight. You’d think someone eliminated three times already would appreciate how precious this time is. Never hold back.
Aw, Kandy. It pains me to put her all the way down here, but there’s no way around it. She dropped the ball during the performance, and her runway outfits were pretty but did not feel appropriate for the challenge. Her lamé was also mostly lame, and the low point on stage. She can bounce back, I think, but she should be very grateful no one was chopped this week.
How would you rank the queens?

Jason Alexander attending the Capitol riots. (Facebook)
Britney Spears’ ex-husband, Jason Alexander, boasted on social media Wednesday (6 January) that he attended the rally that later exploded into the chaos of the US Capitol riots.
Taking to Facebook, the Louisiana boilermaker uploaded a photograph of himself to Facebook wearing a “Trump 45” beanie. Behind him, “Trump 2020”, Blue Lives Matter and Gadsden flags flutter, while pro-Trump supporters chat to vendors and hold banners.
“DC,” Alexander, 38, wrote in the caption. “Millions showed up.” According to the Associated Press, there were thousands, not millions, in attendance.
At the time of writing, it was unclear whether he was directly involved in the ensuing riots that tore through the Capitol complex in an effort to stop Congress from formalising president-elect Joe Biden’s win.

The most liked comment underneath his post read: “And you sir are a d**khead. No wonder Britney divorced your stupid assounds goods.”
Alexander was briefly married to Britney in 2004 as the childhood pals eloped to Las Vegas to get hitched. It was annulled just 55 hours later.
He also attended a “Free Britney” protest outside a Los Angeles, California, court last year in opposition to the pop princess’ ongoing conservatorship.
On Jason Alexander’s Facebook, threatens to ‘kill anyone or thing’ that makes him wear a face mask
Alexander, who lists on his Facebook profile that he is a “journalist researcher at Conspiracy Theories & History”, posted Monday (4 January) a video asking: “Where all my patriots I’m on the Trump train what will you tell your grand kids [sic]” in reference to the Washington DC protest.
“See you in DC,” he noted in the caption.
His public Facebook feed is clogged with conspiratorial memes and theories, such as claims that “NASA lies” and that the Earth is flat, anti-vaccination videos, messages from right-wing commentators such as Candace Owens and rants about why wearing a mask is “tyrannical”.
“I don’t consent to the mark of the beast practices and I don’t value material s**t and I’m locked and loaded ready to kill anyone or thing that trys [sic] to make me, now cowboy up all you b*****s,” Alexander wrote.
He also shared in the post a copied and pasted message that claimed that the US presidential election results constituted a “coup” indicative of the “merge of capitalism into the slide toward socialism”.
“Don’t be surprised if a civil war ensues,” the message began.
Alexander shared a conspiratorial video compilation of Joe Biden sniffing – yes, sniffing – and added: “If I ever meet this f**ker he is getting fed to the alligators straight up.”
We guess Alexander’s favourite Britney Spears song is “Circus”, because this guy is a major clown.

Late Jeopardy host Alex Trebek’s final week of shows began airing this week, and at the start of Monday night’s show, he offered some words about love, kindness, and COVID. Trebek died of pancreatic cancer in November.
Said Trebek: “You’ll recall that about a month ago, I asked all of you to take a moment to give thanks for all of the blessings that you enjoy in your lives. Now, today, a different kind of message. This is the season of giving. I know you want to be generous with your family, your friends, your loved ones. But today, I’d like you to go one step further. I’d like you to open up your hands and open up your hearts to those who are still suffering because of COVID-19. People who are suffering through no fault of their own. We’re trying to build a gentler, kinder society and if we all pitch in — just a little bit — we’re gonna get there.”
